Ubud Village Jazz Festival 2017

This year’s Ubud Village Jazz Festival will be held in  11 and 12 Aug, 2017 and is still taking place at the dramatic ARMA Museum garden, Ubud, Bali. Started in 2013, this “local-community-based” international jazz  festival is preparing themselves for its 5th consecutive year. The festival has gained a lot of compliments from the critics, the musicians and the audiences as well as from the Ministry of Tourism, who supports through Pesona Indonesia, Ubud Royal family and local Ubud community,  and claimed as one of the best jazz festival in the region and became one of “a – must- see ” new attraction of Bali’s tourism agenda. ” We are trying our best to display jazz music in a different way”. Says Yuri Mahatma, the co-founder of the fest who is also a musician. “Our festival does not only provide  great musicians and groups both international and national in two days, but also gives our audiences a memorable experience by giving added value for the price such as an sophisticated lay out design by our architecture team to ensure that our audience can still feel the local wisdom”, he added. ” The bottom line is, we pay an extra attention and effort in details as we believe that beauty comes from details”, says Anom ,also the co-founder of the fest who is in charge in production. ” we’ve been doing this since our first year, and it went really well. People really appreciated it ” he added. UVJF 2017 with “Beautiful Music for Beautiful Minds” for this year theme, will see another imaginative and eclectic lineup, pulling together a wide variety of top tier mainstream, modern, traditional and Latin performers. The highlight of the festival this year is the venerable Gerald Clayton Trio with Joe Sanders (bass) and Gregory Hutchinson (drums). Gerald has been nominated four times with Grammy awards. Clayton,who won second place in the 2006 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Piano Competition, also earned a 2010 GRAMMY nomination for Best Improvised Jazz Solo for his arrangement of Cole Porter’s “All of You. “Battle Circle,” his composition featured on The Clayton Brothers’ recording The New Song and Dance (ArtistShare), received a GRAMMY nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Composition in 2011. He received 2012 and 2013 GRAMMY nominations for Best Jazz Instrumental Album for Bond: The Paris Sessions (Concord) and Life Forum (Concord), his second and third album releases. Joe Sanders : He is without doubt, one of the most sought-after young bass players of his generation. Recently he placed 2nd in the finals of both the International Society of Bassists Jazz Bass Competition and the Thelonious Monk Institute’s International Jazz Bass Competition. The trio is getting much solid with Gregory Hutchinson on drums. is an American drummer of modern jazz . According toMartin Kunzler, his highly differentiated, “lively” game is reminiscent of Roy Haynes and Philly Joe Jones . According to Jazz Magazine , he is “the drummer of his generation”. Internationally acclaimed guitarist from Bali, Balawan, will perform with his music concept mix with Balinese gamelan (Batuan Ethnic). As part cultural support, the Australian Embassy endorses Steve Barry and group tour to Bali. He is the winner of the 2013 Bell Award for Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year and runner-up in the 2013 National Jazz Awards, Steve Barry is a pianist, organist, composer and improviser based in Sydney, Australia. Institut Francaise Indonesia also endorse Samy Thiebault Trio, who will perform with their modern jazz concept. Interesting line ups of UVJF varied from the Indonesian legendary Trombone player, Benny Likumahua, who will share the stage together with his son, who is also one of the respected young bassist in Indonesia, Barry Likumahua. Internationally acclaimed guitarist from Bali, Balawan, will perform with his music concept mix with Balinese gamelan. Maaike den Dunnen from the Netherlands will perform her originals and jazz standards reperoite together with Balinese band. Maaike is highly supported by the Netherlands Embassy. And for the first time, The Austrian Embassy will endorse ,,b.good Vogel’’ Duo. Marc Vogel and Lukas Schiemercombine modern Jazz with popular groove music. Heavy contrasts stimulate senses and mood when elements like improvisation and poetry slam encounter conventional song structures, which in turn get together with groove and Jazz. More line ups is stated officially in   Glen Buschmann Jazz Academy Big Band, who is based in Dortmund, Germany, travels cross the world to perform in UVJF 2017. They have many great reputations around Europe and Russia. Conducted with a great saxophonist player, Uwe Plath, GBJA will perform with 22 musicians in total. The Pre Event will be held one week before UVJF in several venues in Bali, such as Kuta, Sanur, Seminyak and Ubud. The Post Event will be scheduled 1 -2 days after UVJF.
