“COLLABORATION IS THE CURE”
Bali’s iconic John Hardy Seminyak Boutique & Gallery will continue the Chinese Lunar New Year of the Ox celebration’s on March 4th with the launch of a solo exhibition showcasing the debut collection of Mary Justice Designs (MJD), which creates, hand-crafted and expertly painted furniture and home accessories described as ‘fine art as furniture’ highlighting Indonesia’s indigenous flora and fauna. Three years in development MJD has created a collaborative artist community based in Bali which will last in perpetuity.
The debut show entitled, “Re-imagining the Age of Discovery” is a pictorial journey inspired by founder Mary Justice Thomason’s (aka MJ) extensive travels throughout the Indonesian archipelago over 17 years, exploring the country’s rich bio-diverse animal, plant and marine life. A writer, explorer and designer, her passion was ignited on a diving trip to Raja Ampat when she had an “aha” moment. She says, “I immediately knew I wanted to create my own vision of hand painted functional, fine art focusing on Indonesia’s natural world. I wanted to tell the story of this incredible country, its fascinating history, bio-diversity and nature through painted furniture that sits between the space of art and multi-functional design. Most said it couldn’t be done!”
“I’m thrilled to be showing my collection at John Hardy, both John Hardy and MJD share a commitment to sustainable luxury with high- quality, hand-crafted artisanal pieces that celebrate the extraordinary skills and craftsmanship of Indonesia. The artists and their unshakeable sense of community, collaboration, and vision” says MJ.
Speaking about the forthcoming exhibition, John Hardy’s Director of Heritage, Polly Purser explains “The Ox represents an important symbol for Indonesia being so vital to traditional farming techniques on which this country was built and thrived. We are celebrating the attributes of the Metal Ox which is known for its kindness, loyalty and steadfastness – qualities which we hope will help us all as face the challenges of the year ahead.”
