The Balvenie’s Wang Sinawang: Where Timeless Whisky Meets the Art of Slow Craft in Bali

The Balvenie, as the main partner of Jia CURATED 2025, presents The Makers Project in Bali in collaboration with Indonesian multidisciplinary artist Lianggono of Studio Lianggono. The centrepiece, Wang Sinawang, is an installation inspired by The Balvenie’s traditions of Home Grown Barley and the Malting Floor—two of its Five Rare Crafts. From 14 to 18 August at Bali Festival Park, visitors are invited to explore an immersive space where whisky-making heritage meets contemporary Indonesian artistry.

Honouring its Five Rare Crafts, The Balvenie remains the only distillery in Scotland to grow its own barley, operate traditional floor maltings, maintain copper stills, employ in-house coopers, and be guided by a dedicated Malt Master. Through The Makers Project, the brand highlights the makers behind these traditions, inviting audiences to appreciate the beauty of craft, heritage, and the value of creating with intention.

Lianggono describes Wang Sinawang as an invitation to pause, observe, and feel—a celebration of process as much as outcome. Within the installation, natural textures, layered soundscapes, and visual storytelling reflect the patience and precision that define both whisky making and fine craft. Guests can also enjoy live performances and curated whisky tastings throughout the exhibition.

To launch the project, an intimate whisky dinner was held on 13 August featuring a Nusantara-inspired menu by Chef Wayan Kresna Yasa of Kaum Restaurant, paired with The Balvenie’s exceptional single malts. The evening offered a sensory journey through expressions such as the DoubleWood 12 Year Old, Caribbean Cask 14 Year Old, and French Oak 16 Year Old, each revealing a unique facet of the distillery’s craftsmanship.
