Rice Paper Exhibition at Sudakara ArtSpace
Sudamala Suites & Villas Sanur
Sudakara ArtSpace in collaborations with Kertas Padi present, Patience is Earth, Rice Paper Exhibition. The art exhibition features the finest artworks painted with a high-level painting technique using rice paper, as it’s acculturation of Chinese and Balinese’s arts and culture, that held from 19 December 2018 through 6 February 2019, at Sudakara ArtSpace of Sudamala Suites & Villas Sanur.
Patience is Earth – Kesabaran adalah Bumi in Indonesian, a line taken from the famous Indonesian poet, Rendra’s work ‘Paman Doblang’ – is an exhibition that hosts over than 40 collection of artworks made by immensely talented rising artists – 14 from Bali and 2 from China – using special techniques on rice paper, which is an enduring material that is closely associated with traditional Chinese artwork. For some artists, this event has given them their first opportunity to explore such unique medium and techniques. Others may be inspired to delve into new themes or further cross-cultural collaboration. Whatever it may be, Sudakara ArtSpace is delighted to be a part of the discovery and dialogue – its raison d’être.
This exhibition is also true celebration in the sense that it has been specially set up to welcome the Year of the Earth Pig on 5 February 2019. In doing so, with the fortuitously auspicious fate of its timing, Patience is Earth also embraces humanity in all its differences as the exhibition sees Sudakara ArtSpace through major days for different beliefs and cultures during the length of the exhibition: Christmas for Christians, Galungan and Kuningan for Balinese Hindus, and not one, but two New Year days – Gregorian and Lunar calendars.
Sudakara ArtSpace was established as an integral part of Sudamala Resorts’ flagship resort, Sudamala Suites & Villas, Sanur, Bali in 2011. An intensely passionate project, both Sudakara and Sudamala have an incredibly special connection to its founder, Ben Subrata, and his Peranakan Chinese ancestry. Many of the artwork spread through Sudamala Sanur, including in its suites, are influenced by this intricate heritage.
Conversations throughout the years have frequently suggested that Sudakara should honour this bond, so it is with utter joy and pure exhilaration that Sudakara welcomes Kertas Padi’s proposal to host this momentous exhibition. Its significance – in the statement it makes about Indonesia’s intensifying relationship with China, in its effort to recognise Bali’s centuries’ old close ties with China, in its interpretation of creative collaboration, and of course, in its personal meaning to our founder – is simply auspicious.
Sudakara ArtSpace is honoured to be exhibiting the work of all involved artists, particularly those of our talented friends who have been a part of Sudakara’s journey to date, as well as to be working with passionate advocates of Balinese art and culture.
